During the Austin Marathon, Hyvon Ngetich of Kenya spent most of it in the lead. However, when she hit her wall, she hit it hard. Despite the fact that the race organizers were bringing her a wheelchair to be transported off of the course, she kept going, refusing the help.
When onlookers realized what was happening, they began cheering for her. She crawled slowly and painfully to the finish line to place third with the overwhelming support of the crowds behind her. She finished with a time of 3:04:02, amazing for someone who spent part of the race on her hands and knees.
“Running, always, you have to keep going, going,” Ngetich told local TV station KEYE after the race. She said that she doesn’t recall the final 2 kilometers of the marathon or crossing the finish line.
